Masterclass by photographer Gilleam Trapenberg*

*Wednesday, October 16

In this inspiring Masterclass, photographer Gilleam Trapenberg will take you through his creative process and the inspirations behind his work. His solo exhibition Playa at the Stedelijk Museum Schiedam serves as the starting point for this personal story. Trapenberg will share how, as an artist, he makes strategic choices in presenting his work and the role the audience plays in those decisions.

Central to the Masterclass is the interaction between the artist, the audience, and the curator. How can you make your work accessible to a (wide) audience, and what creative and practical considerations come into play?

Curator Sanneke Huisman, who curated the Playa exhibition, will moderate the Masterclass and provide a behind-the-scenes perspective. She will talk about her role as a curator, the choices she makes when selecting and presenting artworks, and how she collaborates with artists like Trapenberg to bring their vision to life.

This Masterclass is a unique opportunity to not only learn from Trapenberg’s personal insights but also to discover how a curator and artist work together to create an exhibition.

About Gilleam Trapenberg
Gilleam Trapenberg (1991) moved to the Netherlands at the age of 19 and graduated from the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague. In the years since, his work has been exhibited in various museums, including Foam and the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam. His first photobook, Big Papi, was published in 2017, and in 2020, Trapenberg received the Florentine Riem Vis Stipendium, an initiative of Foam.

About his exhibition Playa
With a mix of existing and new works from his long-running series Currents, Gilleam Trapenberg depicts the soul of Curaçao as he knows it. Playa offers a distinctive and personal view of Curaçao, where Trapenberg makes the experience of living between two worlds tangible. He transforms the museum’s attic space into an installation that brings the atmosphere of the island to the Netherlands.
