There are always several exhibitions on art and history in the museum. You can also stop by for a cup of coffee, buy a gift in our museum shop or get creative in the Atelier.
*What can you visit?
From 23 November 2024 to 4 May 2025, the Stedelijk Museum Schiedam will be showcasing I Hit You With a Flower – sugar-coated art with a punch, an eye-catchingly sweet exhibition that celebrates diversity in society. It is also a tribute to ‘girly art’, a term that has often been used as a derogatory label but is now being reclaimed as a badge of honour. On show are works by pioneers such as Lily van der Stokker, Kinke Kooi and Pipilotti Rist as well as younger artists such as Vera Gulikers, Frances Goodman, Dae Uk Kim, Jurjen Galema, Mari Katayama and Alex Naber & ChelseaBoy. More than twenty Dutch and international artists will dazzle visitors with everything from pinks and pastels to vibrant colours, gold, glitter, flowers and other motifs.
On Friday 11 October, Coming-Out Day, the Stedelijk Museum Schiedam is opening the exhibition Queer Horizons. Voices of a new generation in the Stadsgalerij. Through art and the participants’ stories, this exhibition explores the theme of queer identity. Together with artist Leon Stoffelen, ten young people from Schiedam and Rotterdam reflect on both Schiedam’s LGBTQA+ past and their own identities and futures.
The Stedelijk Museum Schiedam presents Abstract art by women, then and now, a special collection presentation of abstract art by four generations of female artists. The oldest generation is represented by Lou Loeber, born in 1894; the youngest by contemporary artists Machteld Rullens (1988) and Elsemarijn Bruys (1989), whose works were recently acquired for the collection.
From 28 September, Stedelijk Museum Schiedam will be presenting a new installation by Rotterdam-based artist Elsemarijn Bruys, created especially for our museum. The work, entitled Minimal Art on Acid, is an immersive experience that challenges your perspective and stimulates your senses.
This autumn, the Stedelijk Museum Schiedam presents Adya and Otto. Pioneers within the avant-garde, an exhibition about the extraordinary life and work of the artist couple Otto and Adya van Rees-Dutilh
In Panorama Schiedam, the museum tells stories of the city, from hard workers, dreamers and adventurers to heroes, strategists and survivors.
To celebrate the updated stairwells we asked six contemporary artists to place a work in these beautiful spots in the building.
*To look forward to.
Stedelijk Museum Schiedam is celebrating 750 years of the power of women in the city with the exhibition Women of Schiedam. The story begins 750 years ago with Aleida van Holland, a powerful figure in a male-dominated world, who granted Schiedam its city rights. This marks the start of a rich history where women have shaped and sustained the city.
A chequered tea towel, a piece of wrapping paper, an image in a newspaper or a blurred photograph: for painter Daan van Golden (1936-2017), these were not meaningless images, but serious subjects for his art. With great concentration, he reproduced existing patterns or discovered beauty in the serendipitous moments he captured on camera. This makes Daan van Golden one of the most idiosyncratic artists the Netherlands has ever known.

By public transport, bike or car?
Here’s some tips on how to get to us.
Public transport
Buses 51, 54 and 89, and trams 21 and 24 stop at the Koemarkt stop, a three-minute walk from the museum.
You can take a tram or walk directly from Schiedam Centraal train station, where there are regular trains including the five-minute Intercity from Rotterdam Centraal.
It’s a 20-minute walk from the station to the museum, past the beautiful Sint Janskerk, and the tree on the Grote Markt in which Carice van Houten sat as Poes Minoes in the film of the same name. A small detour will take you along the newly restored Lange Haven, the main artery of the historic centre.
Plan your journey easily with 9292.
Bike
It’s just a 20-minute cycle from Rotterdam Centraal, and there is bicycle parking on the street in front of the museum.
Car
Of course, nothing is too far with a car! There’s paid parking near the museum using a bank card or parking app, but spaces are limited. There are three different car parks a short walking distance from the museum. We recommend the first because the route to the museum takes you past some beautiful spots in the old city centre.
